It has been 30 anniversary after the original Toy Story movie debuted, launching the animation giant as a major animation studio and introducing audiences to iconic characters like the cowboy doll (Tom Hanks) and Buzz Lightyear (the voice talent), who are now household names.
Coming in 2026, the next chapter is set to arrive. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 landed this week, providing a glimpse into the plot but keeping viewers wondering how it will resolve the conclusion of Toy Story 4.
Bonnie's New Toy: A Digital Device Spooks the Toys
The preview shows Bonnie — who inherited the toy collection when he grew up — receiving a latest toy, one that terrifies the familiar toy group. Bonnie acquires her initial digital gadget, and she is excited about it.
Presumably, the amphibian-inspired device will animate just like Bonnie's other toys. Still, the characters seem to view it as a danger intending to supplant them, which it probably is.
Woody's Return: Unanswered Questions from Toy Story 4
An element the teaser avoids is why the sheriff is back with his companions in Bonnie's room. The finale of Toy Story 4 depicted him set off on a new adventure with Bo Peep (the actress), journeying with a fair and assisting prize toys locate loving owners.
Surely, the filmmakers will address the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Witnessing him appear in the familiar setting without warning is a little strange, though. It also makes us wonder whether his partner will have returned with Woody. And where is the stuntman toy (the star)?
Continuity from the Previous Film
Fortunately, some aspects are continuing from the prior film. The last thing Woody did before departing for his new life was pass his symbol of authority to Jessie (the voice actor), leaving her as the leader of the toy domain. The clip displays the insignia attached to her shirt.
Hopefully she is still the key figure among the toys.
Toy Story 5 debuts on the scheduled date.
