Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research suggests that individuals who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a leading health publication points out that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals buying these treatments need to be aware of the danger of fast weight regain when the treatment ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to original mass in about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the drugs explains the heightened rebound.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Issue?

The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

People who have discontinued the medication report a sudden return of cravings.

"It was like a trigger activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," described a patient.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Interest

Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers caution that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success hinges on integrated lifestyle support.
